One of the three persons of the Trinity
Matthew 3: 16-17
So, Jesus was baptized. As soon as he came up out of the water, the sky opened, and he saw God’s Spirit coming down on him like a dove.
17 A voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, the one I love. I am very pleased with him.”
Matthew 28:19
So go and make followers of all people in the world. Baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
John 15: 26-27
When the Comforter comes, whom I will send to you on behalf of the Father, the Spirit of truth, which comes from the Father, he will bear witness of me;
27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.
Romans 8: 9
For you, you do not live according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit, if at least the Spirit of God dwells in you. If anybody doesn’t have the Spirit of Christ, he doesn’t belong to him.
Note that in this verse referring to the Holy Spirit the author says the Spirit of God and then the Spirit of Christ
1 Corinthians 6:11
In the past some of you were like that. But you were washed clean, you were made holy, and you were made right with God in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
2 Corinthians 3: 17-18
The Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
18 And our faces are not covered. We all show the Lord’s glory, and we are being changed to be like him. This change in us brings more and more glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
In this verse, the Apostle Paul calls the Spirit the Lord
Galatians 4: 6
Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.”
Abba Aramaic word meaning Father
Through these verses, we can see that the Holy Spirit is one of the Trinity therefore the Spirit of Christ, the Spirit of God is God Himself.
Since He is God: He is Creator
Genesis 1:26
Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness…
Genesis 2: 7
Then the Lord God formed a man[c] from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

Ezekiel 37: 1-10
The hand of the Lord was on me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones.
2 He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry.
3 He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?”
I said, “Sovereign Lord, you alone know.”
4 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord!
5 This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath[a] enter you, and you will come to life.
6 I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’”
7 So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone.
8 I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them.
9 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live.’”
10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet—a vast army.
He is Omnipotent
Zechariah 4: 6
So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.
He is Omnipresent
Psalm 139: 7
Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?
He is Omniscient
Acts 5: 1-10
Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property.
2 With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet.
3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?
4 Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”
5 When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened.
6 Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him.
7 About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.
8 Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?”
“Yes,” she said, “that is the price.”
9 Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”
10 At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11 Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.
1 Corinthians 2: 9-10
However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived” the things God has prepared for those who love him
10 these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit.
As a person
He thinks
Romans 8:27
And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.
He has a will
1 Corinthians 12:11
One and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing them to each one in particular as He wills.
But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
He distributes gifts in the Church according to His will
1 Corinthians 12: 4-11
There are various gifts, but the same Spirit;
diversity of ministries, but the same Lord;
diversity of operations, but the same God who operates all in all.
Now, to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common benefit.
Indeed, to one is given by the Spirit a word of wisdom; to another a word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit;
to another faith, by the same Spirit; to another the gift of healings, by the same Spirit;
to another, the gift of working miracles; to another, prophecy; to another, the discernment of spirits; to another, the diversity of languages; to another, the interpretation of tongues.
One and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing them to each one in particular as he wills.
Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.
6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.
7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
He may be saddened
Isaiah 63:10
But they were rebellious, they saddened his holy spirit; And he became their enemy, he fought against them.
But they turned against him and made his Holy Spirit very sad. So the Lord became their enemy and fought against them.
Ephesians 4:30-32
Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Let all bitterness, animosity, anger, clamor, slander, and wickedness disappear from among you.
Be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another, as God has forgiven you in Christ.
And don’t make the Holy Spirit sad. God gave you his Spirit as proof that you belong to him and that he will keep you safe until the day he makes you free.
31 Never be bitter, angry, or mad. Never shout angrily or say things to hurt others. Never do anything evil.
32 Be kind and loving to each other. Forgive each other the same as God forgave you through Christ.
He feels joy
Luke 10:21
Then the Holy Spirit made Jesus feel very happy. Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth. I am thankful that you have hidden these things from those who are so wise and so smart. But you have shown them to people who are like little children. Yes, Father, you did this because it’s what you really wanted to do.

17 Then he adds: “Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.”

Revelation 2: 26-29
I will give power over the nations to all those who win the victory and continue until the end to do what I want.
27 They will rule the nations with an iron rod. They will break them to pieces like clay pots.
28 They will have the same power I received from my Father, and I will give them the morning star.
29 Everyone who hears this should listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.
Revelation 3: 5-6
Everyone who wins the victory will be dressed in white clothes like them. I will not remove their names from the book of life. I will say that they belong to me before my Father and before his angels.

Revelation 3: 12-13
Those who win the victory will be pillars in the temple of my God. I will make that happen for them. They will never again have to leave God’s temple. I will write on them the name of my God and the name of the city of my God. That city is the new Jerusalem. It is coming down out of heaven from my God. I will also write my new name on them.
13 Everyone who hears this should listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.
Revelation 3: 21-22
I will let everyone who wins the victory sit with me on my throne. It was the same with me. I won the victory and sat down with my Father on his throne.
22 Everyone who hears this should listen to what the Spirit says to the churches
He bears witness
Romans 8:16
The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.
The function of the Holy Spirit
He helps us and prays for us
Romans 8:26
In the same way also the Spirit helps us in our weakness, because we do not know what it is appropriate for us to ask in our prayers. But the Spirit himself intercedes with inexpressible sighs;
Also, the Spirit helps us. We are very weak, but the Spirit helps us with our weakness. We don’t know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit himself speaks to God for us. He begs God for us, speaking to him with feelings too deep for words.
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.
He led Jesus into the wilderness
Luke 4: 1
Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
He sent Paul and Barnabas on a mission
Acts 13: 4
The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus.
He leads us
Acts 16: 6
Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia.
Romans 8: 14
For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.
He gives intelligence
Exodus 28: 3
Tell all the skilled workers to whom I have given wisdom in such matters that they are to make garments for Aaron, for his consecration, so he may serve me as priest.
Exodus 31: 1-3
Then the Lord said to Moses,
2 See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah,
3 and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills
Job 32: 8
But in reality, in man, it is the Spirit, the breath of the Almighty, which gives intelligence;
But it is the spirit in a person, the breath of the Almighty, that gives them understanding.
He gives strength
Judges 14: 6
The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him so that he tore the lion apart with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat. But he told neither his father nor his mother what he had done.
Judges 14:19
Then the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him. He went down to Ashkelon, struck down thirty of their men, stripped them of everything and gave their clothes to those who had explained the riddle. Burning with anger, he returned to his father’s home.
Micah 3: 8
But I am full of strength, with the Spirit of the Lord, full of righteousness and strength, to make known to Jacob his crime, and to Israel his sin.
But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the Lord, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression, to Israel his sin.
Zechariah 4: 6
Then he answered and said unto me, This is the word which the LORD spake unto Zerubbabel, It is neither by power nor by might, but by my Spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.
So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.
2 Timothy 1: 7
For it is not a spirit of timidity that God has given us, but a Spirit of strength, love and wisdom.
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
He gives skills
Judges 3: 9-11
The children of Israel cried to the Lord, and the Lord raised up a deliverer for them, who saved them, Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.
10 The Spirit of the Lord was upon him. He became a judge in Israel, and he went to war. The LORD delivered Cuschan Rischeathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand, and his hand was mighty against Cuschan Rischeathaim.
11 The country was at rest for forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
But when they cried out to the Lord, he raised up for them a deliverer, Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, who saved them.
10 The Spirit of the Lord came on him, so that he became Israel’s judge and went to war. The Lord gave Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram into the hands of Othniel, who overpowered him.
11 So the land had peace for forty years, until Othniel son of Kenaz died.
Judges 6: 34-35
Gideon was clothed with the Spirit of the Lord; he sounded the trumpet, and Abiezer was summoned to walk after him.
35 He sent messengers throughout Manasseh, who was also summoned to walk after him. He sent messengers to Aser, Zebulun, and Naphtali, who came up to meet them.
Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Gideon, and he blew a trumpet, summoning the Abiezrites to follow him.
35 He sent messengers throughout Manasseh, calling them to arms, and also into Asher, Zebulun and Naphtali, so that they too went up to meet them
Let us consider the story of Gideon. Gideon was a terrified man. There are three reasons for this. First, when God came to Gideon, he found him “threshing wheat in a winepress, to keep it from the Midianites” Judges 6:11. This shows that Gideon feared the Midianites who were “like a multitude locusts ”Judges 6: 5. While Gideon was afraid, God called him a mighty warrior (Judges 6:12) and said to him“ Go in the strength you have ”Judges 6:14. This strength was not not the strength of Gideon for he answered God: “but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family”Judges 6:15. And God said to him, “I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites, leaving none alive” Judges 6:16. This means that the title of mighty warrior and that strength that God spoke of did not come from Gideon, but the God’s presence with him made him strong and powerful. The second reason Gideon was afraid was when God said to him, “Take the second bull from your father’s herd, the one seven years old. Tear down your father’s altar to Baal and cut down the Asherah pole beside it. Then build a proper kind of altar to the Lord your God on the top of this height. Using the wood of the Asherah pole that you cut down, offer the second bull as a burnt offering.”Judges 6: 25-26. In verse 27 he and his ten servants “did as the Lord told him. But because he was afraid of his family and the townspeople, he did it at night rather than in the daytime” Gideon feared his family and the rest of the city. The third reason why Gideon was afraid is that despite the fact that he asked God to prove that it was He speaking to him and God gave him the proof (Judges 6: 17-22), despite the fact that the Spirit came on him and he summoned all the men of the family of Abiezer, Manasseh, Asher, Zabulon and Naphtali, and they all went up to him, but he went to ask God for two more proofs with the piece of wool (Judges 6: 36-40). . When the time came for him to attack the Midianite camp that God had given him, God said to him: “If you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with your servant Purah and listen to what they are saying. Afterward, you will be encouraged to attack the camp” Gideon took Pura and went down” to the outposts of the camp “Judges 7: 10-11. So Gideon heard a man recounting his dream to his friend, and his friend told him that the dream meant that “God has given the Midianites and the whole camp into his hands” Judges 7:14. Then Gideon came out against “Midian, Amalek, and all the sons of the east”Judges 7:12. To show Israel that it was He who gave the victory God did not let Gideon go with his thirty-two thousand men. God told him to send away all those who are afraid and trembling, so twenty-two thousand people returned home and only ten thousand were left. God says that the ten thousand were still too many, to bring them down to the water and to separate all those who laps the water with their tongues like laps a dog from all those who kneel down to drink. So Gideon had only three hundred men who took water in their hand and lapped it. Only these three hundred men went with Gideon. Nine thousand seven hundred more returned home. This means that in all thirty-one thousand seven hundred returned home. These three men had no weapons in their hands, and Gideon gave them “trumpets and empty jars in the hands of all of them, with torches inside.” Judges 7:16. That day three hundred men with trumpets, empty jars and torches won over the Midianites who had with them, the Amalekites and the sons of the east who were “thick as locusts. Their camels could no more be counted than the sand on the seashore”Judges 7:12. It all happened because the Lord was fighting for them. When the Spirit came on a person, He gives him the capacity to do what he could never do on his own.
Judges 11:29
The Spirit of the Lord was upon Jephthah. He passed through Gilead and Manasseh; he passed to Mizpah of Gilead; and from Mizpah of Gilead he marched against the children of Ammon.
Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jephthah. He crossed Gilead and Manasseh, passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from there he advanced against the Ammonites.
Judges 13:25
And the Spirit of the Lord began to stir him in Mahaneh Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.
The Spirit of the Lord began to move him to action while he was in Mahaneh Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.
and the Spirit of the Lord began to stir him while he was in Mahaneh Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.
1 Samuel 10: 20-22
When Samuel had all Israel come forward by tribes, the tribe of Benjamin was taken by lot.
21 Then he brought forward the tribe of Benjamin, clan by clan, and Matri’s clan was taken. Finally Saul son of Kish was taken. But when they looked for him, he was not to be found.
22 So they inquired further of the Lord, “Has the man come here yet?”
And the Lord said, “Yes, he has hidden himself among the supplies.”
1 Samuel 11: 6-13
When Saul heard their words, the Spirit of God came powerfully upon him, and he burned with anger.
7 He took a pair of oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent the pieces by messengers throughout Israel, proclaiming, “This is what will be done to the oxen of anyone who does not follow Saul and Samuel.” Then the terror of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out together as one.
8 When Saul mustered them at Bezek, the men of Israel numbered three hundred thousand and those of Judah thirty thousand.
9 They told the messengers who had come, “Say to the men of Jabesh Gilead, ‘By the time the sun is hot tomorrow, you will be rescued.’” When the messengers went and reported this to the men of Jabesh, they were elated.
10 They said to the Ammonites, “Tomorrow we will surrender to you, and you can do to us whatever you like.”
11 The next day Saul separated his men into three divisions; during the last watch of the night they broke into the camp of the Ammonites and slaughtered them until the heat of the day. Those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.
12 The people then said to Samuel, “Who was it that asked, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ Turn these men over to us so that we may put them to death.”
13 But Saul said, “No one will be put to death today, for this day the Lord has rescued Israel.”
He does not abide in sin
1 Samuel 16: 13-14
So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah.
14 Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him
Psalm 51: 11
Do not cast me away from your presence, do not withdraw your holy spirit from me.
Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.
Ephesians 4: 30-32
Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God for, by that Spirit, God has marked you with His seal as His property for the day of final deliverance.
Bitterness, irritation, anger, loud voices, insults: remove all this from among you, as well as any form of wickedness.
Be kind and understanding to each other. Forgive each other as God forgave you in Christ.
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.
32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
Look what happened to Saul when he was not yet filled with the Holy Spirit he was so afraid of the people that he hid behind the provisions (1 Samuel 10:22) but when he was filled with the Holy Spirit Spirit and that he heard what Nahash, the Ammonite had said to the men of Jabesh so that he would shame all Israel (1 Samuel 11: 1-2) the Holy Spirit came on him, he summoned the Israelites , and before sunrise they entered into the camp of the Ammonites, and defeated them until the heat of the day. The survivors were dispersed one by one. (1 Samuel 13: 9-14 / 1 Samuel 15: 1-35)
But when Saul disobeyed God, he didn’t do what God told him to do. He didn’t ask for forgiveness. He fell under God’s judgment and the Holy Spirit of God left him. So God delivered him up, as the apostle Paul had said in 1 Corinthians 5: 5 about the man who was living with his father’s wife. At that time a demon came upon Saul. This is why, when David sinned and asked God for forgiveness in Psalm 51:11, he said to God: “Cast me not out of your sight, do not withdraw your holy Spirit from me”
Man dies in His absence
Genesis 6: 3
Then the Lord said, My Spirit will not abide in man for ever: for man is flesh, and his days shall be a hundred and twenty years.
He gives the ability to prophesy
Numbers 11: 24-26
So Moses went out and told the people what the Lord had said. He brought together seventy of their elders and had them stand around the tent.
25 Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke with him, and he took some of the power of the Spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied—but did not do so again.
26 However, two men, whose names were Eldad and Medad, had remained in the camp. They were listed among the elders, but did not go out to the tent. Yet the Spirit also rested on them, and they prophesied in the camp.
1 Samuel 10: 9-12
As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed Saul’s heart, and all these signs were fulfilled that day.
10 When he and his servant arrived at Gibeah, a procession of prophets met him; the Spirit of God came powerfully upon him, and he joined in their prophesying.
11 When all those who had formerly known him saw him prophesying with the prophets, they asked each other, “What is this that has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”
12 A man who lived there answered, “And who is their father?” So it became a saying: “Is Saul also among the prophets?”
1 Samuel 19: 20-24
And Saul sent messengers to take David: and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as appointed over them, the Spirit of God was upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied.
21 And when it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they prophesied also.
22 Then went he also to Ramah, and came to a great well that is in Sechu: and he asked and said, Where are Samuel and David? And one said, Behold, they be at Naioth in Ramah.
23 And he went thither to Naioth in Ramah: and the Spirit of God was upon him also, and he went on, and prophesied, until he came to Naioth in Ramah.
24 And he stripped off his clothes also, and prophesied before Samuel in like manner, and lay down naked all that day and all that night. Wherefore they say, Is Saul also among the prophets?
Acts 2: 1-18
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a noise came from heaven. It sounded like a strong wind blowing. This noise filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw something that looked like flames of fire. The flames were separated and stood over each person there. 4 They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak different languages. The Holy Spirit was giving them the power to do this.
5 There were some godly Jews in Jerusalem at this time. They were from every country in the world. 6 A large crowd came together because they heard the noise. They were surprised because, as the apostles were speaking, everyone heard in their own language.
7 They were all amazed at this. They did not understand how the apostles could do this. They said, “Look! These men we hear speaking are all from Galilee.[a] 8 But we hear them in our own languages. How is this possible? We are from all these different places: 9 Parthia, Media, Elam, Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, 10 Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, the areas of Libya near the city of Cyrene, Rome, 11 Crete, and Arabia. Some of us were born Jews, and others have changed their religion to worship God like Jews. We are from these different countries, but we can hear these men in our own languages! We can all understand the great things they are saying about God.”
12 The people were all amazed and confused. They asked each other, “What is happening?” 13 But others were laughing at the apostles, saying they were drunk from too much wine.
Peter Speaks to the People
14 Then Peter stood up with the other eleven apostles. He spoke loudly so that all the people could hear. He said, “My Jewish brothers and all of you who live in Jerusalem, listen to me. I will tell you something you need to know. Listen carefully. 15 These men are not drunk as you think; it’s only nine o’clock in the morning. 16 But Joel the prophet wrote about what you see happening here today. This is what he wrote:
17 God says: In the last days I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will have special dreams.
18 In those days I will pour out my Spirit on my servants, men and women, and they will prophesy.
The promise of the Spirit
Isaiah 32:15
Until the Spirit is poured out upon us from on high, And the wilderness turns into a orchard, And the orchard is considered a forest.
Isaiah 44: 3
For I will pour water on the thirsty ground, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your seed, and my blessing on your offspring.
Ezekiel 39:29
And I will no longer hide my face from them, for I will pour out my Spirit on the house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.
Joel 2: 28-29

But when the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor, Counselor, Strengthener, Standby) comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of Truth who comes from the Father, He will testify and bear witness about Me.
John 16: 7-8
But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor, Counselor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him (the Holy Spirit) to you [to be in close fellowship with you].
8 And He, when He comes, will convict the world about [the guilt of] sin [and the need for a Savior], and about righteousness, and about judgment:
John 16 13-14
But when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth [full and complete truth]. For He will not speak on His own initiative, but He will speak whatever He hears [from the Father, the message regarding the Son], and He will disclose to you what is to come [in the future].
14 He will glorify and honor Me, because He (the Holy Spirit) will take from what is Mine and will disclose it to you.

Fulfillment of the promise

Mark 1: 6-8
John wore clothes made from camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist. He ate locusts and wild honey.
7 This is what John told the people: “There is someone coming later who is able to do more than I can. I am not good enough to be the slave who stoops down to untie his sandals.
8 I baptize you with water, but the one who is coming will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
John 1:33
I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water, that one said to me: The one on whom you will see the Spirit descend and stop, it is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.

I always pray to the great and glorious Father, the God of our Lord Jesus Christ. I pray that he will give you the Spirit, who will let you know truths about God and help you understand them, so that you will know him better.
18 I pray that God will open your minds to see his truth. Then you will know the hope that he has chosen us to have. You will know that the blessings God has promised his holy people are rich and glorious.
Receive the Holy Spirit
John 7: 38-39
If anyone believes in me, rivers of living water will flow out from their heart. That is what the Scriptures say.”
39 Jesus was talking about the Spirit. The Spirit had not yet been given to people, because Jesus had not yet been raised to glory. But later, those who believed in Jesus would receive the Spirit.
John 14: 16-19
And I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another comforter, that he may abide with you eternally,
17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him; but you know him, for he dwells with you, and he will be in you.
18 I will not leave you orphans, I will come to you.
19 A little while longer, and the world will see me no more; but you will see me, for I live, and you will also live.
I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper or Comforter to be with you forever.
17 The Helper or Comforter is the Spirit of truth. The people of the world cannot accept him, because they don’t see him or know him. But you know him. He lives with you, and he will be in you.
18 “I will not leave you all alone like orphans. I will come back to you.
19 In a very short time the people in the world will not see me anymore. But you will see me. You will live because I live.
John 16: 7
However, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go, the Comforter will not come to you; but, if I go, I will send it to you.
Let me assure you, it is better for you that I go away. I say this because when I go away I will send the Helper or Comforter to you. But if I did not go, the Helper or Comforter would not come.
John 20: 21-22
Jesus said to them again: Peace be with you! As the Father sent me, so I send you.
22 After these words he breathed on them, and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit.

Clothed in the Holy Spirit
2 Chronicles 24: 20
Zechariah, son of the priest Jehojada, was clothed with the Spirit of God; and he stood before the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God: Why do ye transgress the commandments of the LORD? You will not prosper; for you have forsaken the LORD, and he will forsake you.
Then the Spirit of God came on Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest. He stood before the people and said, “This is what God says: ‘Why do you disobey the Lord’s commands? You will not prosper. Because you have forsaken the Lord, he has forsaken you.’”

As he was with them, he advised them not to go far from Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, what I announced to you, he said to them;
for John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.
Then the assembled apostles asked him, Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom of Israel?
He answered them: It is not for you to know the times or the times which the Father has fixed by his own authority.
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.
5 For John baptized with[a] water, but in a few days you will be baptized with[b] the Holy Spirit.”
6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”
7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

14 But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”
15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented.
16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.
17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
Mark 1: 4

23 John was also baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there; and people came there to be baptized.
24 For John had not yet been put in prison.
25 Now there arose on the part of the disciples of John a dispute with a Jew concerning the purification.
26 They came to John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he who was with thee beyond the Jordan, and to whom thou hast testified, behold, he is baptizing, and all are going to him.
27 John answered, A man cannot receive except that which is given to him from heaven.
28 You yourselves are witnesses to me that I said, I am not the Christ, but I was sent before him.
29 The one to whom the bride belongs is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands there and hears him, experiences great joy because of the voice of the bridegroom: also this joy, which is mine, is perfect.
30 He must increase, and I must decrease.

14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria.
15 When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit,

17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
Acts 8: 35-38
Philip began to speak. He started with this same Scripture and told the man the Good News about Jesus.
36 While they were traveling down the road, they came to some water. The official said, “Look, here is water! What is stopping me from being baptized?”
37 Philip answered, ‘If you believe with all your heart, you can.’ The official said, ‘I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.’”
38 Then the official ordered the chariot to stop. Both Philip and the official went down into the water, and Philip baptized him.
Acts 9: 17-18
Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”
18 Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized,
Acts 10: 44-48
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.
45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles.
46 For they heard them speaking in tongues[b] and praising God.
Then Peter said,
47 “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.”
48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.
Acts 16: 14-15
One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message.
15 When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. “If you consider me a believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us.
Acts 16: 31-33
They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved you and your household.”

25 He was instructed in the way of the Lord, and with fervor in spirit he accurately proclaimed and taught concerning Jesus, although he knew only the baptism of John.
26 He began to speak freely in the synagogue. Aquila and Priscilla, having heard him, took him with them, and explained to him more exactly the way of God.
27 As he wanted to go to Achaia, the brethren encouraged him there, and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived he made himself, by the grace of God, very useful to those who had believed;
28 For he vigorously denied the Jews in public, proving by the scriptures that Jesus is the Christ.
Acts 19: 1-7
While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples
2 and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”
They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
3 So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?”
“John’s baptism,” they replied.
4 Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”
5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.

12 Now a man named Ananias, a godly man according to the law, and of whom all the Jews living in Damascus bore good witness, came and presented himself to me,
13 And said unto me, Saul, my brother, receive his sight. At the same time, I regained my sight and looked at him.
14 He said, The God of our fathers appointed you to know his will, to see the righteous, and to hear the words of his mouth;
15 For thou shalt be a witness unto him unto all men of the things which thou hast seen and heard.
16 And now what are you delaying? Arise, be baptized, and washed from your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
Romans 6: 1-7
What shall we say then? Should we remain in sin, that grace may abound?
2 Far from it! How can we who have died to sin still live in sin?
3 Do you not realize that all of us who were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
4 Therefore we were buried with him by baptism into his death, so that as Christ rose from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we also may walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have become one plant with him in conformity with his death, we will also be made one plant with him in conformity with his resurrection,
6 knowing that our old man was crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin;
7 for he who is dead is free from sin.
1 Corinthians 1:10-17
I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.
11 My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you.
12 What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”; another, “I follow Apollos”; another, “I follow Cephas”; still another, “I follow Christ.”
13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul?
14 I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius,
15 so no one can say that you were baptized in my name.
16 (Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don’t remember if I baptized anyone else.)
17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.
1 Corinthians 15: 29
Otherwise, what would those who are baptized for the dead do? If the dead are absolutely not raised, why are they baptized for them?
Some translators present the following interpretation:
Why do some get baptized at the risk of being put to death or at the risk of dying? This translation is more appropriate to the following verses where the apostle reveals the dangers he faced each day because of his faith.
Ephesians 4: 4-6
There is one body and one Spirit, just as you have also been called to one hope by your vocation;
5 there is one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6 one God and Father of all, who is above all, and among all, and in all.

in order to sanctify it by the word, after having purified it by the baptism of water,
so that He might sanctify the church, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word [of God
Colossians 2: 11-13
And it is in him that you were circumcised by a circumcision which the hand did not make, but by the circumcision of Christ, which consists in the stripping of the body of the flesh:
12 Having been buried with him in baptism, you also were raised in him and with him, by faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.
13 You who were dead through your trespasses and through the uncircumcision of your flesh, he brought you back to life with him, being gracious to us for all our trespasses;
Titus 3: 5
he saved us, not because of works of righteousness which we would have done, but according to his mercy, by the baptism of regeneration and the renewal of the Holy Spirit,
Hebrews 6: 1-2
Therefore, leaving the elements of the word of Christ, let us strive for what is perfect, without laying anew the foundation of renouncing dead works, of faith in God, of the doctrine of baptisms (of washings), of the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and everlasting judgment.
When Paul says, “We will not talk about baptisms again,” in Hebrews 6 verse 2, it is not because a Christian has to be baptized many times, remember in Ephesians 4 verse 5 he says there is only one baptism. Here he is referring to the Law where when people had or did something that made them unclean they had to wash their clothes, bathe in deep water so that they could be cleansed. Washing clothes and bathing in water is a well-known form of baptism. Old Testament passages such as Leviticus 14, Leviticus 15, Leviticus 17:15, Numbers 8: 7, Numbers 19, and Deuteronomy 23: 9-11 are those that speak of this.
Hebrews 9: 10
and which, along with food, drink and various ablutions, were carnal ordinances imposed only until a time of reformation.
Hebrews 9: 19-20
Moses, after having spoken all the commandments of the law before all the people, took the blood of calves and goats, with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop; and he sprinkled it on the book itself and on all the people, saying:
This is the blood of the covenant that God has ordained for you.
1 Peter 3: 18-22
Christ also suffered for sins once, he righteous for the unrighteous, to bring us to God, having been put to death as to the flesh, but having been made alive as to the Spirit,
19 in which also he went to preach to the spirits in prison,
20 who once had been unbelieving, when the patience of God was prolonged, in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a small number of people, that is, eight, were saved through the ‘water.
21 This water was a figure of baptism, which is not the cleansing of the defilements of the body, but the commitment of a good conscience to God, and which now saves you also through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
22 which is at the right hand of God, since he went into heaven, and angels, and authorities, and powers, were subject to him.

2 Suddenly there came a sound from heaven like a rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.

46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and glorifying God.
47 Then Peter said, Can we refuse the water of baptism to those who have received the Holy Spirit as well as we?
48 And he commanded that they should be baptized in the name of the Lord. Thereupon they begged him to stay with them for a few days.
Acts 11: 15-16
15 When I began to speak, the Holy Spirit descended on them, as it did on us at the beginning.
16 And I remembered this word of the Lord: John baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.
Acts 13: 9-12
Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said,
10 “You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord?
11 Now the hand of the Lord is against you. You are going to be blind for a time, not even able to see the light of the sun.”
Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand.
12 When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, for he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord.

9 He did not discriminate between us and them, for he purified their hearts by faith.
Acts 19: 1-7
While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples
2 and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when[a] you believed?”
6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues[b] and prophesied.
7 There were about twelve men in all.

So the law was like a teacher to lead us to Christ, so that we would be justified by faith.
25 When faith has come, we are no longer under this teacher.
26 For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus;
27 All of you who were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Ephesians 5: 18
Do not get drunk on wine: it is debauchery. On the contrary, be filled with the Spirit;
Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit,
Titus 3: 5
He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,
The Holy Spirit with you
John 14: 16-17
And I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another comforter, that he may abide with you forever,
the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him; but you know him, for he dwells with you, and he will be in you.
And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), to be with you forever
17 the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive [and take to its heart] because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He (the Holy Spirit) remains with you continually and will be in you.
John 14: 26-27
But the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor, Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will help you remember everything that I have told you.
27 Peace I leave with you; My [perfect] peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be afraid. [Let My perfect peace calm you in every circumstance and give you courage and strength for every challenge.]
John 16: 7-11
However, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go, the Comforter will not come to you; but, if I go, I will send it to you.
And when he comes, he will convince the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment:
regarding sin, because they don’t believe in me;
righteousness, because I am going to the Father, and you will no longer see me;
judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the [a]Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor, Counselor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him (the Holy Spirit) to you [to be in close fellowship with you].
8 And He, when He comes, will convict the world about [the guilt of] sin [and the need for a Savior], and about righteousness, and about judgment:
9 about sin [and the true nature of it], because they do not believe in Me [and My message];
10 about righteousness [personal integrity and godly character], because I am going to My Father and you will no longer see Me;
11 about judgment [the certainty of it], because the ruler of this world (Satan) has been judged and condemned.
John 16: 13-14
When the Comforter comes, the Spirit of truth, he will lead you into all truth; for he will not speak on his own, but whatever he hears he will speak, and will tell you things to come.
He will glorify me, because he will take of what is mine and tell it to you.
But when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth [full and complete truth]. For He will not speak on His own initiative, but He will speak whatever He hears [from the Father—the message regarding the Son], and He will disclose to you what is to come [in the future].
14 He will glorify and honor Me, because He (the Holy Spirit) will take from what is Mine and will disclose it to you
The following 5 verses, such as Romans 1: 4, 1 Timothy 3:16, Hebrews 9:14, Hebrews 12: 2, 1 Peter 3:18, are examples of how the Holy Spirit glorify Jésus Christ
Romans 1: 4
and declared the Son of God in power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by his resurrection from the dead), Jesus Christ our Lord,
1 Timothy 3: 16
And, without a doubt, the mystery of godliness is great: He who was manifested in the flesh, justified by the Spirit, seen by angels, preached to the Gentiles, believed in the world, lifted up in glory.
Hebrews 9: 14
how much more will the blood of Christ, which by an everlasting Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works, that you may serve the living God!
how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal [Holy] Spirit willingly offered Himself unblemished [that is, without moral or spiritual imperfection as a sacrifice] to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works and lifeless observances to serve the ever living God?
Hebrews 12: 2
having eyes on Jesus, the head and the consumer of the faith, who, in view of the joy which was reserved for him, suffered the cross, despised ignominy, and sat at the right hand of the throne of God.
[looking away from all that will distract us and] focusing our eyes on Jesus, who is the Author and Perfecter of faith [the first incentive for our belief and the One who brings our faith to maturity], who for the joy [of accomplishing the goal] set before Him endured the cross, [b]disregarding the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God [revealing His deity, His authority, and the completion of His work].
1 Peter 3: 18
Christ also suffered for sins once, he righteous for the unrighteous, to bring us to God, having been put to death as to the flesh, but having been made alive as to the Spirit,
For indeed Christ died for sins once for all, the Just and Righteous for the unjust and unrighteous [the Innocent for the guilty] so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the Spirit;
Acts 9: 31
The Church was at peace throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria, building up and walking in the fear of the Lord, and she was increasing by the assistance of the Holy Spirit.
So the church throughout Judea and Galilee and Samaria enjoyed peace [without persecution], being built up [in wisdom, virtue, and faith]; and walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort and encouragement of the Holy Spirit, it continued to grow [in numbers].
2 Corinthians 3: 17-18
Now, the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
All of us who, with our faces uncovered, contemplate the glory of the Lord as in a mirror, we are transformed into the same image, from glory to glory, as by the Lord, the Spirit.
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty [emancipation from bondage, true freedom]. 18 And we all, with unveiled face, continually seeing as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are progressively being transformed into His image from [one degree of] glory to [even more] glory, which comes from the Lord, [who is] the Spirit.
1 Peter 1: 2
and who are elected according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctification of the Spirit, that they may become obedient, and participate in the sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: grace and peace be upon you multiplied!
according to the foreknowledge of God the Father by the sanctifying work of the Spirit to be obedient to Jesus Christ and to be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace [that special sense of spiritual well-being] be yours in increasing abundance [as you walk closely with God].
The Holy Spirit in you
John 14: 17
the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him; but you know him, for he dwells with you, and he will be in you.
the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive [and take to its heart] because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He (the Holy Spirit) remains with you continually and will be in you.
John 20: 22
After these words he breathed on them, and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit.
And when He said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
Romans 8: 1-27
Therefore there is now no condemnation [no guilty verdict, no punishment] for those who are in Christ Jesus [who believe in Him as personal Lord and Savior].
2 For the law of the Spirit of life [which is] in Christ Jesus [the law of our new being] has set you free from the law of sin and of death.
3 For what the Law could not do [that is, overcome sin and remove its penalty, its power] being weakened by the flesh [man’s nature without the Holy Spirit], God did: He sent His own Son in the likeness of sinful man as an offering for sin. And He condemned sin in the flesh [subdued it and overcame it in the person of His own Son],
4 so that the [righteous and just] requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us who do not live our lives in the ways of the flesh [guided by worldliness and our sinful nature], but [live our lives] in the ways of the Spirit [guided by His power].
5 For those who are living according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh [which gratify the body], but those who are living according to the Spirit, [set their minds on] the things of the Spirit [His will and purpose].
6 Now the mind of the flesh is death [both now and forever—because it pursues sin]; but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace [the spiritual well-being that comes from walking with God—both now and forever];
7 the mind of the flesh [with its sinful pursuits] is actively hostile to God. It does not submit itself to God’s law, since it cannot,
8 and those who are in the flesh [living a life that caters to sinful appetites and impulses] cannot please God.
9 However, you are not [living] in the flesh [controlled by the sinful nature] but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God lives in you [directing and guiding you]. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him [and is not a child of God].
10 If Christ lives in you, though your [natural] body is dead because of sin, your spirit is alive because of righteousness [which He provides].
11 And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit, who lives in you.
12 So then, [a]brothers and sisters, we have an obligation, but not to our flesh [our human nature, our worldliness, our sinful capacity], to live according to the [impulses of the] flesh [our nature without the Holy Spirit]
13 for if you are living according to the [impulses of the] flesh, you are going to die. But if [you are living] by the [power of the Holy] Spirit you are habitually putting to death the sinful deeds of the body, you will [really] live forever.
14 For all who are allowing themselves to be led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading again to fear [of God’s judgment], but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons [the Spirit producing sonship] by which we [joyfully] cry, “[b]Abba! Father!”
16 The Spirit Himself testifies and confirms together with our spirit [assuring us] that we [believers] are children of God.
17 And if [we are His] children, [then we are His] heirs also: heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ [sharing His spiritual blessing and inheritance], if indeed we share in His suffering so that we may also share in His glory.
18 For I consider [from the standpoint of faith] that the sufferings of the present life are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is about to be revealed to us and in us!
19 For [even the whole] creation [all nature] waits eagerly for the children of God to be revealed.
20 For the creation was subjected to frustration and futility, not willingly [because of some intentional fault on its part], but by the will of Him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will also be freed from its bondage to decay [and gain entrance] into the glorious freedom of the children of God.
22 For we know that the whole creation has been moaning together as in the pains of childbirth until now.
23 And not only this, but we too, who have the first fruits of the Spirit [a joyful indication of the blessings to come], even we groan inwardly, as we wait eagerly for [the sign of] our adoption as sons—the redemption and transformation of our body [at the resurrection].
24 For in this hope we were saved [by faith]. But hope [the object of] which is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he already sees?
25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait eagerly for it with patience and composure.
26 In the same way the Spirit [comes to us and] helps us in our weakness. We do not know what prayer to offer or how to offer it as we should, but the Spirit Himself [knows our need and at the right time] intercedes on our behalf with sighs and groanings too deep for words.
27 And He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because the Spirit intercedes [before God] on behalf of [c]God’s people in accordance with God’s will.
When the Holy Spirit lives in someone, this person:
– is freed from the law of sin and death.
– is fond of the things of the Spirit, which is life and peace
– does not live according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit
– belongs to Christ
– will be made alive by the Spirit who dwells in that person
– lives by the Spirit when the actions of the body are put to death
– is a son of God when he/she is led by the Spirit of God
– receives a Spirit of adoption, by which he/she cries: Abba! Dad!
– is a child of God since the Spirit himself bears witness to his/her spirit
– is heir of God, and joint heir with Christ, if however he/she suffers with Him, in order to be glorified with Him
– sighs within him/herself, awaiting the adoption, the redemption of his/her body because this person has the firstfruits of the Spirit,
– does not know what it is appropriate to ask for in prayer, the Spirit himself intercedes according to God with inexpressible sighs;
1 Corinthians 6: 19
Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which you have received from God, and that you are not your own?
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is within you, whom you have [received as a gift] from God, and that you are not your own [property]?
2 Corinthians 6: 16
How does the temple of God relate to idols? For we are the temple of the living God, as God said: I will dwell and walk among them; I will be their God, and they will be my people.
What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said: “I will dwell among them and walk among them; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people
Galatians 4: 6
And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, who cries out: Abba! Dad!
Galatians 5: 16-26
I said therefore: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the desires of the flesh.
For the flesh desires contrary to those of the Spirit, and the Spirit desires contrary to those of the flesh; they are opposed to each other, so that you do not do what you want.
If you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
Now the works of the flesh are manifest, they are fornication, uncleanness, dissolution,
idolatry, magic, enmities, quarrels, jealousies, animosities, disputes, divisions, sects,
envy, drunkenness, overeating, and the like. I tell you in advance, as I said before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, benignity, fidelity, meekness, temperance;
the law is not against these things.
Those who belong to Jesus Christ crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Let us not seek vain glory, by provoking each other, by envying each other.
But I say, walk habitually in the [Holy] Spirit [seek Him and be responsive to His guidance], and then you will certainly not carry out the desire of the sinful nature [which responds impulsively without regard for God and His precepts].
17 For the sinful nature has its desire which is opposed to the Spirit, and the [desire of the] Spirit opposes the sinful nature; for these [two, the sinful nature and the Spirit] are in direct opposition to each other [continually in conflict], so that you [as believers] do not [always] do whatever [good things] you want to do.
18 But if you are guided and led by the Spirit, you are not subject to the Law.
19 Now the practices of the sinful nature are clearly evident: they are sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality (total irresponsibility, lack of self-control),
20 idolatry, sorcery, hostility, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions [that promote heresies],
21 envy, drunkenness, riotous behavior, and other things like these. I warn you beforehand, just as I did previously, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit [the result of His presence within us] is love [unselfish concern for others], joy, [inner] peace, patience [not the ability to wait, but how we act while waiting], kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.
24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature together with its passions and appetites.
25 If we [claim to] live by the [Holy] Spirit, we must also walk by the Spirit [with personal integrity, godly character, and moral courage our conduct empowered by the Holy Spirit].
26 We must not become conceited, challenging or provoking one another, envying one another.
Ephesians 2: 18-22
For it is through Him that we both have a [direct] way of approach in one Spirit to the Father.
19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens [outsiders without rights of citizenship], but you are fellow citizens with the saints (God’s people), and are [members] of God’s household,
20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the [chief] Cornerstone,
21 in whom the whole structure is joined together, and it continues [to increase] growing into a holy temple in the Lord [a sanctuary dedicated, set apart, and sacred to the presence of the Lord].
22 In Him [and in fellowship with one another] you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.
Ephesians 6: 18
With all prayer and petition pray [with specific requests] at all times [on every occasion and in every season] in the Spirit, and with this in view, stay alert with all perseverance and petition [interceding in prayer] for all God’s people.
2 Thessalonians 2: 13
But we should and are [morally] obligated [as debtors] always to give thanks to God for you, believers beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through the [e]sanctifying work of the Spirit [that sets you apart for God’s purpose] and by your faith in the truth [of God’s word that leads you to spiritual maturity].
2 Timothy 1: 14
Guard [with greatest care] and keep unchanged, the treasure [that precious truth] which has been entrusted to you [that is, the good news about salvation through personal faith in Christ Jesus], through [the help of] the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.
James 4: 5
Do you believe that the Scripture speaks in vain? It is with jealousy that God cherishes the Spirit which He made to dwell in us.
1 Peter 1: 2
and who are elected according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctification of the Spirit, that they may become obedient, and participate in the sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: grace and peace be upon you multiplied!
1 John 3: 24
Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him; and we know that he abides in us by the Spirit that he has given us.
The one who habitually keeps His commandments [obeying His word and following His precepts, abides and] remains in Him, and He in him. By this we know and have the proof that He [really] abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us [as a gift].
The Holy Spirit upon you
Matthew 3:16
As soon as Jesus was baptized, he came out of the water. And behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descend like a dove and come upon him.
Mark 1:10
As he came out of the water, he saw the heavens open, and the Spirit descend upon him like a dove.
Luke 1: 35
The angel answered him, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. This is why the holy child who will be born of you will be called the Son of God.
Then the angel replied to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you [like a cloud]; for that reason the holy (pure, sinless) Child shall be called the Son of God.
Luke 2: 25
And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon. This man was righteous and pious, he awaited the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout [carefully observing the divine Law], and looking for the [g]Consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
Luke 4: 18-19
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor; He sent me to heal the brokenhearted,
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me (the Messiah), because He has anointed Me to preach the good news to the poor. He has sent Me to announce release (pardon, forgiveness) to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed (downtrodden, bruised, crushed by tragedy),
19 to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord [the day when salvation and the favor of God abound greatly].”
John 1: 32
John bore this testimony: I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove and rest upon him.
John gave [further] evidence [testifying officially for the record, with validity and relevance], saying, “I have seen the [l]Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him.
Acts 1: 8
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
But you will receive power and ability when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be My witnesses [to tell people about Me] both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and Samaria, and even to the ends of the earth.”
Acts 10: 44-45
As Peter still spoke these words, the Holy Spirit descended on all who heard the word.
All the circumcised faithful who had come with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit was also poured out on the pagans.
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all those who were listening to the message [confirming God’s acceptance of Gentiles].
45 All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles.
Acts 11: 15
When I began to speak, the Holy Spirit descended on them, as on us at the beginning.
When I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as He did on us at the beginning [at Pentecost].
Acts 19: 6-7
When Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.
They were about twelve men in all.
Sin against the Holy Spirit
Blasphemy: the act of insulting or showing contempt or disrespect for God
Rebel: refusal to follow God’s Law
Opposition: contradiction with something
Isaiah 63: 10
But they were rebellious, they saddened his holy spirit; and He became their enemy, he fought against them.
But they rebelled And grieved His Holy Spirit; Therefore He changed into their enemy,
And He fought against them.
Matthew 12: 22-32
So a blind and dumb demon was brought to him, and he healed him, so that the dumb man spoke and saw.
23 All the astonished crowd said, Is not this the Son of David?
24 When the Pharisees heard this, they said, This man does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub, prince of demons.
25 As Jesus knew their thoughts, he said to them, Every kingdom divided against itself is desolate, and every city or house divided against itself cannot stand.
26 If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand?
27 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? That is why they themselves will be your judges.
28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come to you.
29 Or, how can anyone go into a strong man’s house and plunder his possessions, without first having bound that strong man? Only then will he plunder his house.
30 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.
31 Therefore I say to you, All sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.
32 Whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him; but, it will not be forgiven him neither in this century nor in the age to come.
Then a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute was brought to Jesus, and He healed him, so that the mute man both spoke and saw.
23 All the people wondered in amazement, and said, “Could this be the Son of David (the Messiah)?”
24 But the Pharisees heard it and said, “This man casts out demons only by [the help of] Beelzebul (Satan) the prince of the demons.”
25 Knowing their thoughts Jesus said to them, “Any kingdom that is divided against itself is being laid waste; and no city or house divided against itself will [continue to] stand.
26 If Satan casts out Satan [that is, his demons], he has become divided against himself and disunited; how then will his kingdom stand?
27 If I cast out the demons by [the help of] Beelzebul (Satan), by whom do your sons drive them out? For this reason they will be your judges.
28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out the demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you [before you expected it].
29 Or how can anyone go into a strong man’s house and steal his property unless he first overpowers and ties up the strong man? Then he will ransack and rob his house.
30 He who is not with Me [once and for all on My side] is against Me; and he who does not [unequivocally] gather with Me scatters.
31 “Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy [every evil, abusive, injurious speaking, or indignity against sacred things] will be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the [Holy] Spirit will not be forgiven.
32 Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit [by attributing the miracles done by Me to Satan] will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.
Acts 5: 1-11
Now a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property,
2 and with his wife’s full knowledge [and complicity] he kept back some of the proceeds, bringing only a portion of it, and set it at the apostles’ feet.
3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and [secretly] keep back for yourself some of the proceeds [from the sale] of the land?
4 As long as it remained [unsold], did it not remain your own [to do with as you pleased]? And after it was sold, was the money not under your control? Why is it that you have conceived this act [of hypocrisy and deceit] in your heart? You have not [simply] lied to people, but to God.”
5 And hearing these words, Ananias fell down suddenly and died; and great fear and awe gripped those who heard of it.
6 And the young men [in the congregation] got up and wrapped up the body, and carried it out and buried it.
7 Now after an interval of about three hours his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.
8 Peter asked her, “Tell me whether you sold your land for so much?” And she said, “Yes, for so much.”
9 Then Peter said to her, “How could you two have agreed together to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Look! The feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”
10 And at once she fell down at his feet and died; and the young men came in and found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
11 And great fear and awe gripped the whole church, and all who heard about these things.
Acts 7: 51-53
Men with stiff necks, uncircumcised in heart and ears! you always oppose the Holy Spirit. What your fathers were, so are you.
52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous, whom you have now delivered, and whose murderers you have been,
53 you who have received the law according to the commandments of angels, and who have not kept it! …
“You stiff-necked and stubborn people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you are always actively resisting the Holy Spirit. You are doing just as your fathers did. 52 Which one of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They killed those who proclaimed beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become;
53 you who received the law as ordained and delivered to you by angels, and yet you did not obey it!”
Ephesians 4: 25-32
Therefore, rejecting all falsehood [whether lying, defrauding, telling half-truths, spreading rumors, any such as these], speak truth each one with his neighbor, for we are all parts of one another [and we are all parts of the body of Christ].
26 Be angry [at sin—at immorality, at injustice, at ungodly behavior], yet do not sin; do not let your anger [cause you shame, nor allow it to] last until the sun goes down. 27 And do not give the devil an opportunity [to lead you into sin by holding a grudge, or nurturing anger, or harboring resentment, or cultivating bitterness].
28 The thief [who has become a believer] must no longer steal, but instead he must work hard [making an honest living], producing that which is good with his own hands, so that he will have something to share with those in need.
29 Do not let unwholesome [foul, profane, worthless, vulgar] words ever come out of your mouth, but only such speech as is good for building up others, according to the need and the occasion, so that it will be a blessing to those who hear [you speak]. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God [but seek to please Him], by whom you were sealed and marked [branded as God’s own] for the day of redemption [the final deliverance from the consequences of sin].
31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor [perpetual animosity, resentment, strife, fault-finding] and slander be put away from you, along with every kind of malice [all spitefulness, verbal abuse, malevolence].
32 Be kind and helpful to one another, tender-hearted [compassionate, understanding], forgiving one another [readily and freely], just as God in Christ also forgave you.
1 Thessalonians 5: 19-22
Do not quench [subdue, or be unresponsive to the working and guidance of] the [Holy] Spirit.
20 Do not scorn or reject gifts of prophecy or prophecies [spoken revelations words of instruction or exhortation or warning].
21 But test all things carefully [so you can recognize what is good]. Hold firmly to that which is good.
22 Abstain from every form of evil [withdraw and keep away from it]
Hebrews 10: 26-31
For if we go on willfully and deliberately sinning after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice [to atone] for our sins [that is, no further offering to anticipate],
27 but a kind of awful and terrifying expectation of [divine] judgment and the fury of a fire and burning wrath which will consume the adversaries [those who put themselves in opposition to God].
28 Anyone who has ignored and set aside the Law of Moses is put to death without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.
29 How much greater punishment do you think he will deserve who has rejected and trampled under foot the Son of God, and has considered unclean and common the blood of the covenant that [d]sanctified him, and has insulted the Spirit of grace [who imparts the unmerited favor and blessing of God]?
30 For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine [retribution and the deliverance of justice rest with Me], I will repay [the wrongdoer].” And again, “The Lord will judge His people.”
31 It is a fearful and terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God [incurring His judgment and wrath].
Beelzebub is one of the names attributed to Satan (see the blog Les anges sont des créatures célestes). It is said that the name Beelzebub is a bad pronouncement of the name of the god of Ekron called Baal Zebub (2 Kings 1: 2). In the New Testament it is said that Beelzebub is the prince or the leader of demons. So the Pharisees out of jealousy said that it was by the power of Satan that Jesus performed miracles. So they attributed to Satan the miracle that Jesus had done by the power of the Holy Spirit. Therefore they oppose the Holy Spirit, they have trampled on the Son of God and insulted the Holy Spirit (Hebrews 10:29). The Holy Spirit has become their enemy (Isaiah 63:10). This is why Jesus told them that their sin will not be forgiven neither in this century nor in the century to come.
Another example is the story of Ananias and his wife Sapphira in the book of Acts of the Apostles in chapter 5 verses 1 through 11. Notice the apostle Peter said to Ananias, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart so much that you lie to the Holy Spirit, and withhold part of the price of the field?” He said to him again, “You did not lie to men, but to God.” Yes, Ananias did not lie to men because the work that the apostles was doing was dictated by the Spirit of the Lord. The presence of the Holy Spirit was palpable in their midst. It is said in chapter 2 the verse 43 of the book of the Acts of the Apostles “And fear came upon every soul …” This fear is a reverent fear like that which seized Noah (Hebrews 11: 7), it pushes you to obedience. The presence of God produces this fear. So Ananias in complicity with his wife lied to the Holy Spirit. By this lie they tempted the Spirit of the Lord. The word tempted here means to test or to put to the test. This word is used by Jesus when He says “Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God” (Matthew 4: 7) He was referring to the book of Deuteronomy chapter 6 verse 16. It is this same word that is used in the book of Exodus in the chapter 17 to the verse 7 “… the children of Israel had contested, and because they had tempted the Lord, saying: Is the Lord in our midst, or is he not there? ” You could say that by lying Ananias and Sapphira asked themselves the same question. Look what their end was, the children of Israel did not enter Canaan they all died in the wilderness except Joshua and Caleb (Numbers 14: 22-30) and Ananias and his wife perished because ‘they willingly decided to tempt, to test, to try, to despise the Spirit of the Lord. Unfortunately Ananias and Sapphira sinned against the Holy Spirit and this sin as Jesus said will “not be forgiven neither in this century nor in the century to come.” (Matthew 12:32).

17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the spirit of wisdom and of revelation in his knowledge,
18 and let him light up the eyes of your heart, that you may know what hope is attached to his call, how rich is the glory of his inheritance which he reserves for the saints,
I always pray] that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may grant you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation [that gives you a deep and personal and intimate insight] into the true knowledge of Him [for we know the Father through the Son].
18 And [I pray] that the eyes of your heart [the very center and core of your being] may be enlightened [flooded with light by the Holy Spirit], so that you will know and cherish the hope [the divine guarantee, the confident expectation] to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints (God’s people),
