Believe it or not, one of the most challenging things for us, most Christians today, is to focus on God. Yet, we all know that successful people in life is the one who stays focused on the goal. But with all the noise and distractions around us, it becomes difficult for us to focus on our goals. Thank goodness it is not impossible. If unconverted athletes and business people can do it only by training, how much more can a Christian do it. Many times it is easier for us to be distracted than to focus on God. We sincerely believe that everyone reading this page already has in mind a way to stay focused on God. However, for those who cannot achieve this, we will show you an easier way to do it by adopting the following methods: prayer and keeping away from this world’s things. We will also talk about the benefits of focusing on God.

Prayer

 For many reasons, I think prayer is the number one thing that can help a Christian focus on God. The first reason is that God wants to be in a relationship with us, and prayer is the medium that establishes this link. The Bible says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4: 6-7NIV)”. Thus, prayer can help our mind to stay focused on God. The second reason is that God wants us to depend on him. Jesus, the man, relied on God the Father through prayer to do everything. So what makes us think that we can do it on our own without God’s help. Here what Jesus said: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does (John 5:19 NIV)”. And the third reason is that Jesus invited us to pray and ask the Father whatever we want in His name. “Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete (John 16:24 NIV)”. So if a Christian wants to focus on God, the first method is prayer.

Staying away from this world’s things

The second method is to walk away as much as possible from the things of the world. The Bible says, “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.  The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever. (1 John 2: 15-17 NIV)”. Now you will be able to say but listen, I don’t have these things in me. The truth is that until the Holy Spirit shows them to you, you will never believe you have them in you. Now the question is how to stay away from these things while we are still in the world? You can stop listening to their music, their jokes, watching their movies, avoiding being their friends, etc. I’m not saying you can’t talk to them because we see them every day. Some are our family, and some were our best friends before we became Christian. You have to stay connected with them, so they can see the work that God has done in your life. And you pray to God to convince them to become a Christian. I mean, avoiding being their friends is not explaining your problems to them, especially those that are happening in your church or things that you wait for God to do for you. When you do this, the devil always uses them in specific ways to tempt you. The Bible says, ” Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers,  but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,  and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither whatever they do prospers. (Psalm 1: 1-3 NIV)”. It also says in the Bible, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.  Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5: 14-16 NIV)”. So the Bible advises us to avoid the unconverted unless we try to win them over to God.

Like a computer, we store information in a stack (data on data). So we do them in terms of last in, first out. In other words, it’s easier to remember the last thing we heard than the first. The devil knows this, and that’s why he tries to fill our brains with all the garbage he can find. He knows that if our brains are full of trash, the chance for us to do God’s will is insignificant because we can only do what we have inside. And the funny thing is that our judgment determines our action. And the latter depends on what we have in our mind or our heart. Jesus said: “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of (Luke 6: 45 NIV)”. This is why Paul and Timothy gave this advice to the Christians of Philip: ” Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things (Philippians 4: 8 NIV)”. See, God knows that too. So God wants us to stay away from the ordure of the world, fill our minds with His word. The more we read and meditate on the word of God, the stronger our faith will become, ” Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ, (Romans 10:17 NIV)”. The more we do our best to fill our minds with the word of God, the easier it will be for us to focus on God.

It is beneficial for us to focus on God because it helps us spiritually and in all other aspects of life. When we rely on God, He will assist us in everything we do. It is said in the holy scriptures, “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. (Joshua 1: 8 NIV)”. Therefore, many things will be easier for us than for others. I am not saying that we will not have difficulties in our life, but we will be able to deal with them more quickly than people who do not rely on God. Jesus himself said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world (John 17:33 NIV)”.

 Everything I just said has shown us how to help us focus on God and its benefits. So, it is in a Christian’s best interest to focus on God. He will be by our side every step of the way. God bless us, and please pass these words on to everyone you know.
